STUDIO PERFORMANCE

The studio performance went better than I anticipated it would be. I was initially very worried about forgetting my dance or making a mistake but I didn't and I am overall quite pleased with the final outcome. I am very glad we had the opportunity to have a studio rehearsal as we were able to get feedback from my teacher and peers as a new perspective can help identify problems, spacing issues and clarity of dynamics being among these.

My feedback from my teacher was to firstly be more expressive while I'm dancing, I feel that I definitely could have used my facial expression more but I was too focused on just remembering the choreography. Next time I perform, I am really going to emphasise this and loosen up my neck as I know it will enhance my performance and make it appear more natural.
Furthermore I need to be more spatially aware as I seemed to have run out of space during the front-right corner section. To rectify this, I have thought about what opportunities I can use to move further back in order to have space for the leap. If I walk backwards instead of forwards in the second pre-chorus and aim to start the second chorus centre stage I will be able to have enough space for the following section of the dance.
Additionally, I have to ensure that my dynamics are clear during all movements especially my sharp or slow head turns to the front. Unclear dynamics can negatively impact a piece and make it less effective.

The learning outcomes for this module are:
- to critically analyse and evaluate a variety of works by a chosen choreographer within the current dance scene.
- demonstrate the application of theories, processes, devices and technical dance skills to choreograph, create and design original dance to pre-selected stimuli
- critically evaluate and reflect on personal choreographic work and the creative process used

I feel as though I have successfully, coherently and critically analysed Crystal Pite's works. My critique includes all of my interpretations and understandings of the pieces. Through my blogs, I believe I have documented the theories, processes and technical dance skills I used in my final piece to convey the pre-selected stimuli (cog head). Through these blogs I have also been able to identify my strengths and weaknesses therefore self-evaluating my work effectively.

  1. I really liked reading about your experiences with the studio performance, I'm glad it went well for you! I also like how you have considered the learning outcomes and applied them within your work! Has this process of receiving feedback helped your choreographic process? If so, how?
    Good luck for the assessment.

    1. Thank you very much! Yes, it has been so helpful to see my work from another perspective. It has definitely highlighted the weak points in my dance that I hadn't noticed before.

  2. I love your solo, I can see the emotion though your movement and really enjoyed how you played with the beats. As you will be focusing more on your facial expressions in the performance, how do you feel this will positively effect the expression of your stimulus?

    1. I think that the change in my facial expressions will definitely show my stimulus clearly, it will show how drastic the mood of a schizophrenic person can change very quickly.

  3. Has the application of feedback made the work more or less successful in your view? Additionally, how have you applied the feedback you received throughout the creative process? How did the Studio Performance create an impact on your creative process? Are there any last-minute additions and/or changes edits required to your work? Also how will you ensure to create the best possible outcome, ensuring to sustain yourself, keeping engaged and the purpose behind your piece, throughout the duration of the choreography?

This is a well-considered post and I feel you have shown a clear understanding of the topic, I feel the work you have produced so far is possibly around the 2:1 criteria. If you are looking to progress to a 1:1, it will be worth considering the quality of your reflective skills, research, ability to answer the questions and critical thinking. By demonstrating the ability to develop plans of action and integrating received knowledge of practitioner-based processes with evidence of varied personal research as well as critically reflecting your process (showing awareness of own strengths, weaknesses, and developing ability to compare alternative theories and analytical approaches) and considering possibilities, and their consequences to develop appropriate actions, it will offer new questions for your consideration and may help you identify areas you might not have considered with within your project. Can you ensure you have evidence of these areas within your work.

    1. The feedback from you and my peers has definitely positively impacted my work, seeing things from another perspective is really interesting as other people view my work in a different way from how I do. The main piece of feedback that really transformed my work was to loosen my neck up and use my facial expression more- the studio performance definitely highlighted what was lacking in my dance and it was the performance aspect of it. After this, I had to sort out some spacing issues as I ran out of room in the last section of my dance. I think it is so important to be conscious of my facial expression the whole of the performance as it will keep the audience engaged.
