CHOREOGRAPHIC DEVICES 18/9/19

Today in class we participated in a task that involved us joining together our phrases from last lesson with another person to make one longer piece- to further develop this we then got given a list of choreographic devices that were to be incorporated within this piece. After revising the initial version of the choreography we included devices like contrast , embellishment, and retrograde.  I really liked this exercise because it was challenging to find different ways to develop our basic movements and it was also interesting to observe the progression from before and after the development. I feel this was important to acknowledge as the addition of choreographic devices like these can truly transform a piece. The second task we had to do was to compose a short phrase based on our zodiac sign. I found this less difficult than the first one as this stimulus made it easy to form a piece. My star sign is a Leo and our stereotypical characteristics are energetic, dominatin...

KEY PRACTITIONER LESSON 1- in the countenance of kings

I quite enjoyed watching this piece as there was a myriad of components that appealed to me as both a dancer and spectator. The music was definitely one of the most prominent features that influenced the piece- the score started off with violin plucking, this in turn evoked the feeling of anticipation and excitement. The odd time signature is the first aspect that connoted towards an idea or freedom or normality. The video starts off in a typical studio setting however there is a dog- this anomaly could have been easily overlooked as a random choreographic quirk but alternately it can be interpreted as Peck highlighting the theme of normalcy in this piece.   The girl's reflection takes out her hair and lets it down- this simple action has significance as it further contributes to this idea of freedom and letting go. Within the dance it was interesting to observe that all the transition steps were running, again promoting the theme of freedom. What can also be appreciated from ...

INTRODUCTION TO CHOREOGRAPHY 11/9/19

Today we engaged in 3 different improvisation tasks to help form 2 phrases: The first one was moving across the studio at a low level (this included low energy movements on the floor like rolling & floor work), a medium level (this required a moderate amount of energy like plies & backbend) and a high level (this consisted of elevated movements like leaps and jumps). These exercises helped us to differentiate between the three main categories of movement so we are able to use them in choreography. It is important to have an understanding of this because if all movements in a routine were at the same level, the lack of dynamics would lead to a boring dance; furthermore the use of this choreographic device allows the dancer to demonstrate artistry and musicality which is pleasing for an audience to watch. The second task was to write our name using body different parts. This stimuli was effective as it was easy to create movement that flowed from one step to another; this ...
