STIMULI- 9/10/19
In today's lesson we discussed ideas about the different stimuli that we can use for our solos:
Our first stimulus was Pollution. The picture we were given clearly shows an image of an industrialised area with an alarming amount of smoke surrounding it. This stimulus was interesting as pollution is a current international affair that has recently been gaining lots of media attention. Pollution has extreme effects not only on the environment but also on the human body; it can cause diseases or permanent issues like cardiovascular or respiratory illnesses. Some ideas for the dance would be heavy movements with resistance as the air has become more dense due to pollution. Another idea was to start with normal-paced movements and slowly progress to bigger and slower paced movements to show the deterioration of the human body after being exposed to the toxic fumes the addition of a narrative like this would help to emphasise the stimulus further.
Another stimulus we looked at was a picture of a man holding a camera. I liked this because there were so many diverse things to interpret, for example the idea of a camera brings connotations of perspectives. Looking through a lens, not everyone is going to see the same thing- different items or people might stand out to a different set of eyes. To portray this through choreography I could repeat the same movement or phrase but with different choreographic devices. Photos are little flashes of life that can be remembered forever: this can be shown through dynamic, stop-starting movements.
An additional photo we looked at was an image of a girl holding a gun. This was very thought provoking because similarly to the pollution it is a current issue. It connoted ideas of political conflict and brainwashing children to be aggressive. Contrasting actions can be used to convey the juxtaposition between the innocence of a young girl and the violence brought about the gun.
The one I was most drawn to was the image of the person with the cogs in their head. I liked this one the most because there are so many varied ways to understand what is going on in the picture. What I can interpret from this is that mental illness is not always immediately visible to other people as comes from inside. Also, the mind is a complex part of us that controls our whole body; it is so valuable because its is powerful but delicate.
Well done, you have generated a variety of unique and interesting ideas which I think will be inspiring for your choreography. Maybe consider including the stimulus images to help explain some of the areas that you are talking about? I like how you have already considered what movements you might use for each stimulus.
ReplyDeletethank you!
DeleteI really enjoyed reading this blog. You have included some really interesting points based around your thoughts and feelings relating to each stimulus.
ReplyDeleteI feel you have gone into detail about each stimulus and you have explained clearly why you have decided to choose your final idea.
maybe you could add in some photos of each stimulus so the reader can get a really clear understanding of the different stimuli.
overall I feel this is a really good blog containing some interesting points.
Did the use of group discussion have an impact on your thoughts? What other ideas and interpretations were discussed during the lesson? Reflecting back, what drew you away from the other options and towards the 'Cog Head' stimuli?
ReplyDeleteThe group discussion definitely had some impact on my own thought processes and opinions. When we were talking about the camera picture, someone was talking about the situations people take photos in and what kind of environment the man was in. This is not something I had though about or paid attention to before someone had mentioned it so it was really interesting to see how others' thought processes differed from my own.
DeleteI felt most drawn to the cog head stimuli because I thought it was the most interesting one. The human body as a stimulus was very appealing to me as it has strong scientific influences and, as i have previously mentioned, choreographic ideas and inspiration are endless when you can research a lot.
