CHOREOGRAPHIC DEVICES 18/9/19
Today in class we participated in a task that involved us joining together our phrases from last lesson with another person to make one longer piece- to further develop this we then got given a list of choreographic devices that were to be incorporated within this piece. After revising the initial version of the choreography we included devices like contrast, embellishment, and retrograde. I really liked this exercise because it was challenging to find different ways to develop our basic movements and it was also interesting to observe the progression from before and after the development. I feel this was important to acknowledge as the addition of choreographic devices like these can truly transform a piece.
The second task we had to do was to compose a short phrase based on our zodiac sign. I found this less difficult than the first one as this stimulus made it easy to form a piece. My star sign is a Leo and our stereotypical characteristics are energetic, dominating, loud and vain. In my piece I coordinated all parts of my body to create large movements, which in turn conveyed the assertive aspect my personality. I also incorporated many high releases and backbends to portray my openness and loyalty. Moreover the animal associated with my star sign is a lion- Lions have powerful legs they use to pounce and run which is why I have included many elevated steps like a barrel jump and leaps. This is definitely the task I have enjoyed the most in our choreography sessions because it was the most personal, it will be interesting to see everyone else pieces as everyone's personalities are quite diverse and will have interpreted the task differently. I look forward to further developing my choreography in the future.

This is not a bad start to your week 2 post!
ReplyDeletePlease title as Week 2- Choreographic Devices
Please think about the following points:
- More detail on the various choreographic devices we looked at during class is needed (you could insert photos of the hand-out to illustrate this).
- What is the purpose of integrating choreographic devices and the exercise set in class?
- How did the integration of four choreographic devices affect your final phrase of movement?
- Did you notice any strengths or weaknesses? If so, how will you develop your weaknesses/ how did your strengths assist you within the task?
- Were you successful with the task set?
- Which choreographic devices did you use and why?
- What was the purpose of performing these tasks in front of the rest of the class?
What you have written about your zodiac task is good.
Think about:
- Do you think the purpose of the movement successfully came across to the audience?
- How did you find this creative task? Interesting? Easy? Difficult? Why?
- How did the allowance of more time affect the final product of your phrase?
- Did you notice any strengths or weaknesses? If so, how will you develop your weaknesses/ how did your strengths assist you within the task?
- What chorographic devices did you integrate and how/ why?
- Were you successful with the task set? Was it readable to the audience?
Please include videos to illustrate your writing. Ensure to reference your videos, so as a reader there is a clear connection.
You have included interesting points, well done!
Miss Norman
Your writing is very detailed and I pleasant to read. As you found the first task the most challanging, how did you overcome the challange?
ReplyDeletethanks! I initially struggled with finding ways on how to develop my basic movements but I then just thought of how I could incorporate choreographic devices to improve my work.
DeleteI like how you have expanded on the simple zodiac qualities and looked deeper into your Leo meaning and incorporated lion characteristics. What made the first exercise all the more challenging than the zodiac task? As well as this, did you find the experience of the first task help you choreograph the zodiac solo?
ReplyDeletethanks! I found it difficult to incorporate different devices without actually changing the choreography but eventually was able to.
DeleteYes, the first task was good practice for incorporating choreographic devices and it was easier to do it when you have a stimulus and are creating fresh choreography.
You have gone into detail about the creative tasks we participated in during class. I like the way you have also given your own opinion towards the first task and mentioned what you found challenging. Further, you have discussed the movements you did in order to portray your given zodiac traits, which is really good. If you were to add any choreographic to your zodiac routine, which ones would you add?
ReplyDeleteThanks! I would use contrast to reflect on how we are stereotypically quite dramatic. I would also add the device argumentation to show how big Leo personalities are.
