INTRODUCTION TO CHOREOGRAPHY 11/9/19

Today we engaged in 3 different improvisation tasks to help form 2 phrases: The first one was moving across the studio at a low level (this included low energy movements on the floor like rolling & floor work), a medium level (this required a moderate amount of energy like plies & backbend) and a high level (this consisted of elevated movements like leaps and jumps). These exercises helped us to differentiate between the three main categories of movement so we are able to use them in choreography. It is important to have an understanding of this because if all movements in a routine were at the same level, the lack of dynamics would lead to a boring dance; furthermore the use of this choreographic device allows the dancer to demonstrate artistry and musicality which is pleasing for an audience to watch.

The second task was to write our name using body different parts. This stimuli was effective as it was easy to create movement that flowed from one step to another; this was further developed by including devices like impulse, release and impact. This changed the dynamics of the phrases and therefore made them more interesting.

The third task included us receiving a series of numbers that corresponded to a certain movement. We then created a sequence from our phone numbers, for example 0 was a shunt and 3 was a turn. This again was effective as a stimuli as it made it easy to form a phrase. We joined these two phrases and used an adjective to change the dynamics for example I chose the adjective 'sad' thus making my movements slower and more grounded.

I really enjoyed our improvisation exercise at the start of class because we did a lot of improvisation in my previous school. I think it is an creative way to express your ideas and feelings and I would consider it a strength of mine. However I do feel as though some parts in my piece are slightly disjointed therefore I have to develop my linking steps next lesson so the piece flows more naturally.

  1. Your presentation within this post is good and your video is clear. You have clearly stated the creative tasks within the lesson and described what you have created, good work.

Although you have made an adequate attempt to address each question within the task, your thoughts and feelings throughout the lesson could be developed. Question how each creative task made you feel, if you found anything difficult, and how this affected your movement. Consider how you would change the movement if you had to perform this task again.

You have started to recognise your strengths and weaknesses however again within your post this is very limited. If you are looking for the higher marks, you should discuss how your strengths assisted you within the tasks and how you will improve your weaknesses over the course of the module. Also again, consider what you would change if you performed this task again.

I feel as though if you could reference the video within the blog, providing a brief description of what the video contains, it would improve the post and help the reader understand the content. You do not have to limit yourself to one video – multiple videos and referencing could help illustrate each task.

Overall, this is a good first blog post - there is some good content and reflective analysis. I look forward to seeing how your blog develops.

    1. The first task made me feel a bit worried as although I like improvisational exercises, I struggled to stay on one level throughout the task. This resulted in my movements being repetitive and it took me longer to reach the other side compared to others. If I had to do this task again I would consider lots of travelling movements at each level so I can travel across the floor faster.

The second task was probably my favourite as I have never tried anything like this before. My movements were quite similar as there are many round letters in my name (Caitlyn). In the video you can see I make lots of round movements with my arms especially in the beginning. If I were to attempt this task again I would use my last name (Francisco) as it is longer and more challenging.

I really liked the third task as I found it very interesting. I used my phone number and it has all different digits in it which I felt made the task easier. If I were to complete this task again I would make up a phone number with some of the same numbers to make it more challenging. I would then repeat the same movements but at different levels.

As I consider improvisation as a strength it really helped me and I didn't find myself becoming stuck with choreographing. Throughout the course of the module I want to focus on learning more transition steps so I can comfortably incorporate them into my choreography.

The video shows my phrase based on my name. The first movement shows a large half circle with my arm which correlates to the first letter of my name 'C' and it's a large movement to show it's a capital letter.

  2. Watching your piece I didn't find it disjointed and you looked like you were melting in some of your movements which reminded me of tears, it looked very affective.

  3. This piece of choreography had a range of dynamics and allowed the piece to flow and came across as fluid when watching, I especially like the moments of stillness, as this created highlights within the kicks and made it go from a small movement to a big movement, why did you choose to do this with your piece?

    1. thank you! I chose to use contrast as I feel that levels can enhance a piece and keep the audience engaged.

  4. I agree that improvisation is a great way to "express your ideas and feelings". And I find that I'm heavily impacted by the music when improvising. So when it came to choreographing I struggled at first without any set music. Did you find the lack of set music to be a hindrance when choreographing?

    1. I did struggle initially, however I then found that I relied more on my stimulus for choreography ideas.
